    Sciency let's talk books

Post  RobertBlack on Mon Aug 22, 2016 3:19 am

Is it better to go with Smashwords and Amazon?

I actually started with Smashwords, got pretty pissed off with them, and at that time Amazon said you can only publish with them.

I have loyally stayed with Amazon ever since, and I have been pretty happy with them.

But sometimes I get confused with their system.

Yesterday, for example one of my short stories just took off, no idea why.

And now it is has just settled down again.

Amazon KDP hands down. That's where most sales come from, right?

Smashwords goes through Barns and Noble, Kobo, (iBooks?), and a few others.

In fact my book is on both Smashwords and Amazon. The SW version is formatted all shitty and is an earlier draft. The only reason it's there is so I could get price matching for my book to be made perma-free on Amazon.

KDP is a lot easier in terms of formatting, like a couple hours and you've got it. Smashwords is a F-ing headache.

On KDP you pretty much just add the TOC and make sure all your page breaks are in order. Then everything converts into EPUB automagically when you upload to KDP right from the Word file.

Have you had luck adding graphics or illustrations on KDP?

I tried and I couldn't get anything to come out right.

I mean the cover is fine, but I tried adding some maps and stuff and nothing looked right.

For small graphics it's fine though, I think.

Referrals?  I get these unexpected spikes too.

Sometimes it's after I mention my novel somewhere, but other times there is no explaining it.

Maybe somebody read your story and mentioned it to a group of people, who in turn DLed it and maybe told someone others, and so on.

The coolest thing was last year when I started in this writing workshop. I mentioned the novel when we introduced ourselves, and one of my peers had read it.

I was in this Facebook writing group when I was in Paris, it was cool for a while, but there were always these break off groups, and eventually I got drunk, nasty, and banned.

    Some nice girls though

And I am at the stage of ignoring thumbs up, I want to sell.

We could do a review swap if you want?

I am like a legendary reviewer, I don't think we need to actually read each others books, just give me a synopsis.
