A conch is a sea mollusk with a big spiral shell.  Can't believe you don't know that. What are you, an inlander? Rolling Eyes

I met an Colorado dude in Beijing who didn't know what a scallop was.  Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

The problem is that a lot of people have been through moderate hurricanes before, so they think they'll get through this one.... despite the footage from the Caribbean, the Government and media's very strongly worded warnings, and the facts of the storm's unprecedented lethality being very clearly spelled out again and again.

The government doesn't have the mandate or the resources to go around forcing people out.  Also there're a lot of people with nowhere to go, no car, or no money for travel.  They should at least get to the mainland onto a shelter on high ground, like a school.  The entire Florida Keys is likely to find itself completely underwater and joined with the sea.  Survivability odds are not good in those circumstances.

Fake news media hype plays into this too.  People are so used to not believing the media now, some of them are shrugging this off.  Except this is no bullshit very extremely real.

I shudder at the potential death toll.  "Florida" doesn't need to evacuate.  People need to get to high ground shelters is all.  That's how these things are dealt with.  I had to do it as a kid.  Sure it sucks to be crammed up in a school with all the other residents for a couple days, but it beats being flooded out or having your house fall down on top of you.

The Keys does need to evacuate because it has NO HIGH GROUND.  It's only a few meters above sea level at its highest points.

I know what scallops are because I have eaten them with linguini.

Yeah, thanks for schooling me on hurricanes.

The entire Keys underwater? Sounds like a prophecy from the Book of Revelations man!

The 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse are coming down through the clouds soon too then?

I can't find the video I watched earlier, but this lady took it from one of the islands some distance from the storm. She walked to a dock and the sea was *gone.* All the way to the horizon was nothing but exposed sea bed. This was because the storm had sucked up all the water for its surge.

So, yeah, I'm guessing it's enough to cover most of the keys which are barely above sea level.

Scallops are one of the only shellfish I can enjoy eating. They're fantastic cooked up spicy buffalo wing style.

It's balmy and unseasonably cold here.  I figure the internet goes down tomorrow night sometime, followed by the power.  Hopefully it's not staying down more than 2-3 days.  I'd rather have the internet up than the power since we got a generator.

There's no telling how hard we'll be hit yet.

If I do happen to die in the storm, I'm cool with it.  I'm the only one with the admin password for this site and registration is open so SK will just go on and on and on for eternity.  A thousand years from now I will be worshipped as a deity and my posts quoted with great reverence.

CNN interviewed a guy staying in the keys.

But he seems to know what he's doing.

He's shacked up in a high-rise concrete building that he seems confident can withstand this hurricane.

    police cannot respond to calls.

assuming most cops haven't evacuated themselves?

maybe people looting are risking their lives and should be more concerned with finding a safe place?

never been in a hurricane. i don't know.

Yeah very soon.  I can't believe my internet is still up.  It's raining like a bitch and the wind is def picking up even with the storm still being hundreds of miles off.

The government and the police are totally useless for the normal resident.  The news makes it look they're doing all this stuff for everyone, but that's mainly just specific urban areas.  Otherwise it's our tax dollars hard work with a bunch of rich asshole politicians making "announcements" about how severe the storm is, which is something we already know.   Rolling Eyes

Not here.  You'll get head blown off if you try that shit here.

I imagine there will be quite a bit of it in Miami and other cities.

Once again, minorities get benefits that I don't. Rolling Eyes

The projected eye path shifted east again and right back up my poopchute.   affraid

Now we have to be "on the lookout" for these sudden tornados Irma is spawning ahead of herself.

In the news:  the news in FL continues to be as dumb as the residents here.

'You Won't Make It Turn Around': Florida Police Warn People Against Shooting Weapons at Hurricane Irma

That's right.  The dumbasses are out firing guns at the storm Yosemite Sam style and need to be informed by the authorities that it won't do any good.   scratch

I can not believe I still have power and internet.  It's starting to get hairy out there with the winds.  Debris is all over the road already and I'm looking at the massive trees in the neighborhood getting thrashed around.  The last hurricane destroyed several homes on this block just because of those humongous trees falling everywhere.

Florida is a basically a big sandbar.  There's no topsoil; it's all just sand.  And they have these tropical oaks that everyone loves that grow giant horizontal branches.  They're nice because they provide shade and such, but the thing is those massive branches are hollow and they fill with water and literally weigh tons when they fill up and break off/uproot and destroy houses and fkn kill people.  Rolling Eyes

This shit is all going down any second now, I'm sure.

I don't know WTF I'm going to do.  Read books?  Have "conversations" with my father?

Oh God this is gonna suck.  pale

I think there's a couple bottles of vanilla extract in the cupboards, but that would just be a tease.

This lady across the street has a bunch of those megatrees on her property.  My dad and her are on bad terms cuz he legally forced her to cut one down that was threatening this house years ago.  Everyone was mad at him, but then like a couple weeks later he was vindicated when a hurricane hit and the block got wrecked by falling trees.  She's still got more that are threatening her house and some other neighbors, very precarious looking ATM and due to become moreso.

Not being native Floridian dumbasses, we're covered. No fkn trees in house smashing distance.  Instead of trying to fend off the superstorm with firearms, we got a generator and enough food to feed an army cuz some evacuees gave us all their food, mostly dairy and meat.  The fridge is full of packages of butter, sour cream, cream cheese, cheese... you name it.  There's at least 8 pounds of meat in the freezer. A good portion of the garden is indoors bearing fresh veggies and greens. There is all kinds of rice, grains and canned stuff.  We have 14 gallons of gasoline for the generator and 20+ gallons of potable water bottled, in addition to an underground rainwater cistern that can be tapped if the town water supply goes.  So if a neighbor does get displaced from a monster tree smashing their house in half they can bunk here if needed.

Provided they bring me some m'fkn LIQUOR.   Mad

Man, everything just want quiet.  Then darkness fell in seconds like someone dialed down a dimmer switch.

How I still have internet at this juncture is a frkn profound mystery.

Usually a light breeze knocks is enough to knock it out here.

This sudden quiet and darkfall is realllly eerie.  I'm gonna go outside and see whassup.

It's not the eye yet, maybe something going on between the bands or who knows.

    I still have internet. cheers

With any luck it'll keep veering west. Otherwise we're moving into inner band eye territory over the night. It's expected to be overhead in another 10 hours. Windy as fuck outside already. Ain't nobody driving nowhere now. There're branches and debris and shit all over the streets.

Wouldn't that be a hoot if I rode this whole thing out watching youtube videos and playing online games. Not counting on it though. The forecast is hurricane conditions by daybreak, likely slowed to category 1 or 2, which'll still be pretty brutal. I'm just about sure at least one of my neighbors is gonna get their house crushed by a monster tree.

I don't think the Keys was totally destroyed like you said.

I haven't heard anything about huge death tolls either.

Well, 26 people died in the Caribbean. Technically, that's not a massive catastrophe. And homes are not as strong there.

    3 million people without power?

    You running off the generator?

Nah, I got power and internet.  I really don't know how this is possible considering that this hot mess is what I'm sitting in the middle of:

I mean, we lose power and internet all the time over nearly nothing and it's stormy as hell out right now.

There's no way it'll stay on through morning.

I'm wasting it by watching IT.  They should call it "shit" cuz it's stupid.

Damage is still being calculated as the crisis remains ongoing.  The Keys are still getting sorted out, but seems not to be as bad as I feared, which is a good thing.

So Sciency's internet is definitely down now.

    Which means ....

I will reveal his real identity while he's gone.

Say private shit about his life.

    And loot his forum.
